In this lesson I was taught how to make a barrel. We went through the modelling process and texturing process. We did a few extrudes in Maya and learned a thing or two in Photoshop. The process was pretty straight forward and I found it fun. The texturing, although was pretty good I did find it tedious. Warping the different sections of the rings around the barrel and blending the white spaces from the duplicated parts of the reference image was very time consuming. I had problems with more up to date barrel saves which meant I had to re do the UV’s about three times in photoshop which started to stress me out.
I learned how to turn a rectangle texture into a circle by using Polar Coordinates. To get to them i clicked Filter – Distort – Polar Coordinates. I was also introduced to unfolding UV’s in the UV Editor. This allows you to also see and texture the extrudes in the model. I just clicked Modify – Unfold.
Here are the screengrabs which show the progression of the barrel being created.
